NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old student from Jamia Millia Islamia was found shot dead inside his car in south Delhi’s Sarojini Nagar on Tuesday morning. Police say it was likely a case of suicide though the student’s family members claim he was murdered. There was a bullet wound on the right temple.
The deceased, Rizwan Khan, was a state-level hockey player and allegedly in love with a woman who studies in a college in Rohtak. His family has alleged that Khan was killed by the woman’s family members.
Police say they received a call at 10.19am and the team that was dispatched found Khan’s body lying in a pool of blood and a country-made pistol in his right hand.
They have not found any suicide note from the spot. DCP (south) Romil Baaniya said, “From the inspection of the site, and taking into account the circumstances, prima facie it appears to be a case of suicide. The post-mortem will be performed tomorrow. Inquest under 174 CrPC is on.” No FIR was registered till late on Tuesday.
Khan lived with his family in Subhash Nagar, near Tihar village, in west Delhi and had left home for hockey practice around 10am on Monday. When he did not return till late night, family members initiated a search. According to police, Khan went to the woman’s house in Sarojini Nagar’s on Monday evening and handed over a bag containing Rs 2 lakh and a mobile phone.
He wanted to meet the woman but was told that she had gone to Odisha to attend an event. The cops claimed that Khan sat in his car the entire night, probably trying to contact her.
