Eminent cardiologist Dr Ashok Seth, also the chairman of Fortis Escort Heart Institute in Delhi and its Medical Governance Board, has been conferred with the prestigious Dr BC Roy Award by President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan last week.

Having received the honour, Dr Seth said India needs more doctors at the district level to reach patients living in interiors and villages.

“Nearly one in twelve people in India, aged above 40 years, suffer from coronary heart diseases,” he said.

Dr Seth had previously won the Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri too. Speaking to Mail Today, Dr Seth said: “The number of patients with coronary heart diseases are increasing in the country, but we have very less specialists for treatment. For this, government should take initiative to produce more doctors.”

He has planned for a low-cost medical facility model. “I am hoping to reach patients at their door steps and smaller hospitals in the country. I am looking forward to few tie-ups to get 70-80 percent patient care done quicker than ever.”
