Women are not the only ones who desire to curtail the inevitable lines and wrinkles that begin to appear on their face. Men are also looking for options to maintain a younger appearance through cosmetic enhancements like Botulinum.
When it comes to fast, effective treatments for reducing the signs of aging, Botulinum is the most popular option available. This safe injectable has helped millions of people soften lines and wrinkles that add years to their face. However, while many people may think this is a product targeted toward women, both genders enjoy the benefits. Botulinum can have a positive impact for both men and women, giving them a youthful, more energetic appearance.
How Botulinum Works
Even though Botulinum is the most common cosmetic procedure used in the U.S., many people are misinformed on exactly how this biological agent works to minimize the signs of aging. Botulinum toxin type A, or Botulinum, has been approved by the FDA to treat various conditions since 1989, specifically approved for cosmetic treatment for frown lines, between the eyebrows in 2002, and crow’s feet around the eyes. This toxin is derived from the Clostridium botulinum bacteria and is one of seven toxins it produces.
Botulinum works to soften the appearance of certain lines and wrinkles through selective muscle denervation. This is a medical term for a temporary paralysis that Botulinum causes in the muscle. This occurs by Botulinum blocking the targeted muscle receptors for acetylcholine, a chemical that causes the muscle to contract. By stopping this muscle contraction, Botulinum softens lines and wrinkles that are caused by these contractions, creating a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Undergoing Botulinum Injections
What makes Botulinum such a popular procedure for both men and women is how fast and effective the treatment is without down time. Botulinum injections are extremely quick, only taking a few minutes to undergo the procedure in an office visit with a medical professional. Patients can get in and get out without a large investment in time, making it a convenient option to reduce the signs of aging.
Botulinum is injected directly to the targeted muscles causing what are referred to as “dynamic wrinkles” or wrinkles that deepen with muscle contraction. Within 48 hours, the effects of the agent begin to curtail muscle contraction, with noticeable aesthetic differences within three to seven days after the procedure.
Another reason Botulinum is the number one cosmetic procedure for reducing lines and wrinkles is that the effects last for months, yet they are temporary. Most people will continue seeing the benefits of Botulinum for about four months before the effects will begin to wear off. Since the toxin is temporary, those unsure of undergoing a permanent cosmetic procedure are more willing to try Botulinum. If they are happy with the treatment, they only need to have injections two to three times a year. For those that only want to try the product, they can have the peace of mind that it is only temporary if they decide not to continue with treatments.
More Men Are Seeking Botulinum Treatments
When Botulinum first became popular, women were the target audience. After all, women had traditionally been the gender that spent the most money on anti-aging products. However, having a more youthful appearance is desired by both men and women, making Botulinum the perfect gender-crossover product. The treatment has become so popular with men that it has even earned its own nickname, “Bro-tox.”
Whether it is to look more virile for their partner, competing with younger co-workers in the workplace, or just to bolster their own self-esteem, there is no doubt that Botulinum is becoming commonplace amongst men. Between 2000 and 2014, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons has reported a 337 percent increase in the number of men seeking Botulinum. In 2014, over 400,000 men received the treatment in the U.S., and those numbers continue to grow with each year as more men discover the positive impact Botulinum can have on their appearance and confidence.
The stereotype that striving to look younger and more attractive is only for women is finally being put to rest with the emergence of Botulinum. When it comes to wanting a safe, effective option to slow the signs of aging, with Botulinum, men and women are finally on an even playing field.

What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face.Dermal fillers are non-surgical cosmetic treatments used to bring a more youthful appearance by restoring volume or fullness to the face and lips.
Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implants, soft tissue fillers, or wrinkle fillers are medical device implants approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for use in helping to create a smoother and/or fuller appearance in the face, including nasolabial folds, cheeks and lips and for increasing the volume of the back of the hand.
As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. The facial muscles are then working closer to the skin surface, so smile lines and crow’s feet become more apparent.
The facial skin also stretches a bit, adding to this loss of facial volume. Other factors that affect the facial skin include sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle.
How Dermal Fillers Work
Dermal fillers are a naturally-derived or synthetic material that is directly injected into skin with the purpose of plumping that area to the point where the wrinkle, depression, or fold is gone. Depending on the type of filler, the effects can last anywhere from six months to two years; for semi-permanent or permanent fillers, the effects can last up to five years, and there are reports of even longer-lasting results.
Don’t confuse dermal fillers with Botulinum. Although both procedures involve injections, Botulinum is most often injected around the forehead and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet) to stop muscle movement that results in wrinkles. It has nothing to do with the plumping smoothing effect dermal fillers have.
Because they work in different manners, many people elect to get both Botulinum and dermal fillers—the combination can produce a remarkably younger-looking face.
Areas that can be treated with dermal fillers
Dermal fillers can be used as cheek fillers, forehead line fillers, glabellar line fillers, and acne scar fillers.
They can also be used on the peri oral lines, nose to mouth lines, and mouth to chin lines.
In current practice, several dermal fillers are available for use in the United Kingdom, in addition to subdermal fillers, or those that are placed underneath the dermis in the subcutis.

· How does Botulinum work?
Botulinum (Botulinum) works by blocking the impulses from the nerves that control muscle movement. When injected into muscle tissue, a muscle relaxation results after about three days such that the muscles cannot contract. This creates a smooth rejuvenated appearance of the overlying skin that can last anywhere from three to eight months. When used for the treatment of dynamic facial lines (also known as upper facial rhytides), the effect typically last for about ten to twelve weeks.
Issues that may be resolved by Botulinum injections include:
Headaches – Botulinum injections have been clinically proven to improve migraine headaches and minstrel migraines in women. The treatment includes as many as one to forty injections in the face and neck. Some patients and clients may not find relief immediately and may require additional treatments to find relief. Botulinum is used to precisely paralyze muscle movement. In other words, slow down the muscles “over-activity” that causes migraines and headaches. The benefits of these injections should last for many years.
Excessive Sweating –Botulinum is a preparation of protein which, when small doses are injected into the skin, blocks the nerves that supply the sweat glands. This prevents the glands from producing sweat. A Botulinum treatment is not a cure for hyperhidrosis, heavy sweating – it only provides temporary relief. It needs to be repeated every three to six months for maximum effect. Botulinum injections are routinely done “off label” in the treatment of hands or feet in hyperhidrosis clients.
Arthritis – Many forms and types of arthritis exist, each of which with their own symptoms. Arthritis will affect the joints, ligaments, and can result in chronic pain that is unable to be treated with over the counter medications. Botulinum can free the tension in joints and ligaments around the knees.
Back Pain – Studies have shown that treating back pain with the use of Botulinum injections can result in relief for up to four months. The injections are not painful and can be done same-day.
Nerve Pain – Neuropathy, also referred to as nerve pain, is pain that can affect the hands, feet and legs. Research shows benefit when a Botulinum injection is administered just under the skin in the affected area. These are often times helpful to for those doing manual labor.
Mild Sweating – Excessive sweating is more than just a nuisance. Individuals with hyperhidrosis can sweat uncontrollably even in cool temperatures. Mild sweating can be fixed with Botulinum. When injected it can be used to paralyze the nerve that sends the signal to the brain to sweat.
The Ease of Getting Botulinum Injections
Botulinum injections are a remarkably easy aesthetic treatment. In fact, many practitioners refer to it as a lunchtime procedure. That’s because it takes just a few minutes to perform. Even better, there is no downtime associated with the procedure. Most people are able to continue with their normal routine immediately after receiving treatment.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Those who have medical conditions, such as damaged nerves or muscle complaints, should disclose this information during consultation, to avoid any complications. Treatment is not advisable for those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. While there are no clinical studies to show that the injection is harmful to the baby or mother, medical professionals advise against having treatment under these circumstances.
Botulinum is a purified protein used to address wrinkles associated with facial expression. The safety and efficacy of Botulinum has not been determined in women who are pregnant or breast feeding. For this reason some doctors recommend that such patients return for their treatment after breast feeding is complete
The easiest way to visualize the difference between Botulinum and Dermal Fillers is to think of mountains and valleys. Botulinum smoothes out mountains and prevents them from being pushed together, while Dermal Fillers fill in the valleys.
Have you been curious about Botulinum and wonder if it’s right for you? Maybe you’ve seen photos of Hollywood stars or other media personalities who have undergone Botulinum treatments and have barely recognized them or have been a little bit shocked by what you see – and not in a good way.
- The face doesn’t move.
- The eyebrows create a scowling look.
- Parts of the face don’t look consistent with each another.
- The eyebrows seem to be stuck in a perpetually “surprised” look.
- The corners of the mouth are uneven or curve up way too much.
Good Botulinum, on the other hand, looks like this:
- Natural and soft. Facial movement is still there but maybe just not quite as much.
- All parts of the face look consistent with each one another.
- Eyebrows are in a natural position and move with various facial expressions.
- Your face looks rested, as though you’ve just come back from a vacation.
- There are some wrinkles consistent with age, but at about 10 years younger.
here is no scientific reason as to why you shouldn’t fly after Botulinum and dermal fillers. And it’s certainly not dangerous
The best advice we can give you is to try and book your appointment at least a few days before you go away. Why? Because Botulinum and dermal fillers can take a few days to settle, especially Botulinum as it takes up to 2 weeks to fully relax the muscle (although you should start noticing changes around 4-5 days).
We always advise our clients to refrain from any strenuous exercise, alcohol and extreme heat (such as saunas) within 24hrs. So, the same could be said for treatment as it could potentially cause discomfort and be detrimental to the final result. More so than a danger!
